Position Summary:

We are seeking experienced setters to join our setting team full-time. NMB seeks to provide varied and interesting climbing to all ability levels and invests heavily in the professional and personal development of setters to achieve quality setting.  Successful candidates must demonstrate a passion for climbing and community, as well as high levels of teamwork and willingness to learn. The NMB Setting Team will strive to create and operate as a “community of practice.” The NMB setting team will consist of a group of climbers who work together regularly to try to evolve and grow the craft. The setting team will strive to create an environment that empowers one another through teaching and sharing knowledge on how to use different setting tools (e.g. volumes, holds and setting styles) in their individual pursuit of furthering their craft.

A Full-Time Setter, under the direction of the Head Setter, will assist in the management of the Setting Program at NMB.  An individual in this position will assist in the scheduling and training of setting staff, assist with the ordering of climbing holds and setting equipment, as well as team and project management.  That individual will also participate in the sets twice a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays), and will assist in overseeing, training and managing the setting crew on these days. Additionally, a qualified individual may be considered for further work developing and managing the adult climbing instruction program(s) at NMB. Additional hours worked in other areas of NMB are outside the scope of this job description.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Full-time Setters are responsible for the following:

  • Set equitable number of boulder problems each setting day

  • Participate in, and contribute to, team forerunning of all boulder problems

  • Assist team members as necessary

  • Assist in the training and support of newer or apprentice setters

  • Assist in wall maintenance tasks as they arise during the setting day

  • Help maintain setting shop and equipment

  • Perform setting-related tasks as directed by Head Setter

Non-setting duties:

  • Assist Head Setter with Setting Program Management tasks

  • Asist Head Setter with creating and placing hold/volume and equipment orders within a designated budget

  • Assist in the scheduling of setters and Wall Maintenance crew

  • Assist in the management and supervision of the Wall Maintenance crew

  • Be able to take on additional setting program related tasks as assigned

  • Maintain professional relationships with all NMB staff

  • Interact with customers and be a positive representative of NMB in the community

  • Work with other NMB program employees and managers to fill additional hours of position

You have:

  • At least 3-years climbing experience

  • Ability to climb V6 in many styles comfortably

  • Past setting experience

  • Teamwork and communication skills are a must

  • Passion for climbing and community

  • Desire to continually work to improve own climbing and setting skills

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Though the setting will be performed on a regular basis (limited to two days each week except in special circumstances), many duties require an ability to be flexible in working hours:  Weekday, weekends, and nights may be required.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

  • Full-time Setting wages range $16-$22/hr, DOE

  • Scheduled for 2 setting days (11 hrs each) per week at setting rate.  Additional Setting Program Management, Instructional and/or Programming work will be required to reach full-time status.  Wages for non-setting positions are negotiable.
