North Mass Boulder is designed to be a welcoming space that forges a vibrant community centered around health, friendship, and purpose. Our Community Arts Program was created to amplify the artistic expression of our community members. We believe that fresh, community-generated art breathes life into our facility and inspires a more meaningful and thoughtful experience for our members and guests.

Application Process

If you are interested in showing your work with us, please submit a single PDF document with all of the following information to communityart@northmassboulder.com. If accepted, we will work with you to curate a selection of pieces to be displayed at our Roosevelt facility for up to two months.

Resume

In your resume, please focus on your experience showing your work. Whether you’ve had your work in galleries, coffee shops, or at a friend’s house, let us know how you’ve put your art out into the world in the past. Please limit this to one page.

Portfolio

Please submit either 10 of your top pieces or two distinct series (of roughly 8-12 pieces total) that you would like to show.

Artist Statement

Why do you create? What inspires you? What does your work say? We are looking for what makes your work unique, intriguing, and meaningful. Please limit the length of your artist statement to one page.

Content Criteria

NMB is an inclusive and family-friendly facility. We won’t accept work containing nudity, profanity, or inflammatory political content, and will make decisions on artist submissions based on our values.

Current Artist

Luke Shades

For the past 15 years, living on the East Coast and spending most of my days on or near the water, my work has been deeply influenced by the movement and rhythm of aquatic

environments. I seek to capture this energy through abstract forms, combining ordinary plywood and metal to translate the flow of water and aquatic life into sculptural expression.

Rather than bending or shaping the wood, I glue large sheets of plywood into solid blocks and carve them much like an artist carves marble, revealing layers that convey motion and depth. The exposed wood layers, combined with oxidized metal accents along the leading edges, create a dynamic contrast—earthy rust tones and the cool sheen of bronze. These materials resonate with my love of the outdoors and invite viewers to experience a sense of fluidity, healing, and connection.
